4 Things to Do Before Your First Appointment with a New Dentist

Posted on

Switching to a new family dentist can be a bit stressful, especially if it's been awhile since you've had to switch. Still, if your previous dental office closed or if you had to relocate, there's a good chance you're in the process of finding a new dentist to trust with your oral health needs. Once you've made your appointment, there are still a few things you'll want to do before your first visit with a new dentist.

Double-Check Your Insurance Information

If you have dental insurance, you probably checked with your new dentist when you called to make your appointment and made sure that they accept your insurance. Still, you'll likely need to bring in your insurance card and possibly have some other information handy so that it can be entered by the office staff before your first appointment. Specifically, your dentist's office may need the insurance policy holder's name, employer, date of birth, and social security number, so be sure to have this available.

Fill Out Your New Patient Forms

You may be able to download and print your new patient forms online before your appointment. If this option is available to you, it's highly recommended, as filling out your paperwork ahead of time will save you time in the waiting room. Plus, it'll give you time to answer some questions that you might not know off the top of your head, especially those related to your family medical history. Just be sure to bring these in with you at your first appointment.

Stop in for a Meet-and-Greet

It's never a bad idea to stop in at your new dentist office during regular hours to meet the staff, especially if doing so will make you feel more comfortable before your appointment. If you have children who are nervous about switching dentists, this can also be a great way to quell anxiety and help them prepare for their first appointment there.

Check Online for New Patient Promotions

Finally, if you don't have insurance or if you're looking for additional savings, check out your new dentist's website. They may have specials available, such as a free first exam for new patients. Just be sure to print out any offers you find and call ahead of time to let them know you'll be using them at your next appointment.

With these tips in mind, you'll be prepared for a smooth transition to a new family dentist. Learn more by contacting family dentists such as Tony Parsley, DMD.
